"Shrike". I named this after a character from the book , "Hyperion", written by Dan Simons.
There is also a songbird called as the "Loggerhead Shrike" and known for it's habit of impaling prey on thorns or barbed wire.
I'm just guessing but I'd say that Dan Simons named his character after this bird.
In any event, they are, in all likelyhood, extinct now. In 1987 there were only 18 breeding pairs remaining in Wisconsin.
